Add a "Public/Private" Setting to Membership Status
I am trying to use Meetup as a tool for managing a group for individuals who might want to have their group membership anonymous. Today I received my “Meetups this week” email, with my list of scheduled Meetups, which is great and helpful. When I opened it up, the first line of information is “Meetups your friends are going to.” So now it seems that event if I do hide my Meetups from view, I could still end up on my “Friends” Meetup schedule email telling them of my group participation. This this whole discussion is about me, and others like me, using Meetup as a tool to manage a groups which might, for whatever reason, prefer to keep that particular group membership and participation, anonymous. It seems it would be a good feature, albeit against the best practices of open social networks, for individuals to have a “Public/Private” state setting for each of the groups they attend. If I make it “Private” than simply my membership is private to the whole Meetup world, except those who are in that particular group. A workaround for this is to make a meet-up account under a Nome de Plume, and that’s fine for the organizer, but then none of those in the Meetup community, who would wish to keep their own real name off the list of this new Meetup, would too need a new Meetup account with their own Nom de Plume. You can see how this could become a little unmanageable. However, a “Private/Public” setting would solve all of this.
