What new feature would you like to see on Meetup, and why?

Require a "Host" for "Meetups in the Making" before it can become official.

I love that my members make suggestions for meetups, HOWEVER, if I (organizer or co-organizer) cannot host or attend that meetup, SOMEONE has to step up to host it before I will allow it to be made official. Have a box underneath "What" and "Where" called "Host/s" where members can step up to host and be the "go-to" person for the event.

With the newish "suggested" format, vs the former meetup in the making, organizers can set the page such that they remain under the suggested tab until the organizer announces.
Go to 1) Group tools 2) Group settings 3) Basics 4) scroll down to: Let Members Suggest , and select your setting.

I believe all meetups of every kind need to have either a host or an organizer, one who is active and takes that position seriously, I know some very good organizer/hosts, but I know a few really bad ones who do not bother to take responsibility for their own meetup, and what I mean is that they just are with their own clique and do not bother with other people, why do this then? Just make a few calls and make a get together.

Very soon, this high vote getting idea will become two years old. I think Meetup HQ either doesn't have the balls to say no, or just doesn't listen... Or both.

As I noted earlier, however "Meetups in the Making" are brain dead and bound to failure. We don't allow them in any of our groups because of the anguish that results.

This should clearly but up to the group organizer, it should not be a meetup-high decision. Delegate.

I agree, I have been to a few Meetups where there was no host and the organizer could not attend. I've complained to Meetup because at these Meetups the "regulars" do not bother with the "newbies" and also, this is a big liability issue, people do not realize that if something goes wrong, there is liability here, and it will fall on the organizer for not attending and meetup as well. All events should require someone in charge.

I think we should go back to the old way of suggesting an event and allowing the organisers to set up the person that posted it to host on 1 ocassion only. We've had the problem where a member has been able to post the same event to repeat every week but rermoved themselves from attending thus leaving the event hostless and is still on previous calendar with zero attending

There are way too many problems with "Meetups in the Making". Getting a host is just square 2. If you want to see how badly things can go there are plenty of examples.

For example, "self elected hosts" - cannot set RSVP limits, or deadlines. Self selected hosts can not set up or collect payments through meetup (and they shouldn't be able to unless approved). They also cannot select a waiting list method - or whether there is a waiting list at all.

I was severely burned as a "guest host" by not being able to set an RSVP limit.

They cannot (and should not) be able to send emails to group members including those who "Yes" unless an organizer approves and until approved, they shouldn't have the power to include or exclude members who sign up for the event.

Grrrr +1 "Meetups in the making" are a fiasco and a black eye to hard working organizers regardless whether someone steps up to "host" or not the main problem is that "MITM" allow ANYONE to change the date, time and location which makes for a roller coaster ride for all involved. Bring back "Ideas" with voting and the ability to change them.

They really messed up the events when they combined them with suggestions. They should just go back to the old system where suggestions remain suggestions and can only be changed into an event by an organizer - who can decide whether or not there is enough info and a dependable host before doin so.

      • GrrrrGrrrr commented  ·   ·  Flag as inappropriate

        I don't understand why they don't require a host, a time and a location.

I like the sound out this. I would love to host events but I can not currently pay to become a organizer. I do however search on my own free time free events in my area and would like to go just not alone. So this would be great, and if enough people are suggesting a ton of events that would make the groups really active and I can only see how you can gain from this and get your moneys worth.

I agree with Dorothy's comment. I encourage my members to create events. I wish events suggested by members could automatically be shown as hosted by the suggesting member. I get emails from members asking me questions about events I have nothing to do with. It is a waste of everybody's time for me to tell them, "I'm not the host, all I know is what is written in the meetup event description, which you can also read."

      • DorothyDorothy commented  ·   ·  Flag as inappropriate

I tell my members that "if you post it, you host it". It would be perfect if the poster were automatically designated as host. I don't mind if other members, or myself, help fill in the details.

Meetups in the making should have a host, a time, and a place before they become official.

Probably never happen since it conflicts with Scott's Mayhem agenda.

I voted for a required host but I sure don't want Meetup HQ to make it so that the organizer can't change the host. In my group, a host is called the "Contact Host" and is specified in the first line of the description. The host that can change event details after the event is moved to official events is only me.

Hi Leanne, absolutely mitm needs work!
Great idea on 1-day delay, or adjustable delay! To make mitm most useful, we need date/time below, event-host here (for member proposed meetups), and conversion from discussions... (for organizer proposed groups) as mitm just doesn't *quite* work well in many types of meetup groups. http://meetup.uservoice.com/forums/37079-ideas-and-suggestions-for-meetup/suggestions/1739255-option-to-highlight-discussion-mitm-idea-plus-on
